Job Summary:
As the Controller at Lenex Steel, you will lead the accounting and financial reporting functions for a leading structural steel fabrication contractor serving commercial, industrial, and infrastructure markets throughout the Midwest and beyond. This is a key leadership position reporting directly to the CFO and playing a critical role in financial strategy, operational support, risk management, and long-term growth. The Controller ensures complete and accurate financial reporting, drives process improvements, and partners with operations to support project profitability and business growth. These skills will be used to:
- Lead the vision, strategy, and continuous improvement of Lenex Steel’s finance and accounting functions.
- Ensure complete and accurate financial reporting under US GAAP for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting periods for both internal and external constituents.
- Develop and maintain standard monthly internal financial reporting packages as well as financial data used throughout the organization.
- Lead project and job cost accounting, including Work in Progress (WIP) reporting.
- Partner with Operations and Project Managers to ensure financial accuracy and profitability by tracking job costs, labor, materials, and subcontractor expenses for each project while monitoring project margins, backlog reporting and cost forecasts.
- Evaluate the needs of the organization and help develop a strong Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) function that includes a fully integrating financial forecasting system comprised of a rolling 12-month forecast and cash flow projections.
- Identify and implement continuous process improvements and innovations related to current financial operations, including accounts payable, billings and collections, job cost accounting, financial reporting, and forecasting.
- Drive ERP optimization and process efficiencies within Viewpoint Vista.
- Improve financial processes by leveraging AI, automation, and digital tools.
- Partner with Sales & Estimating, Operations, Purchasing, and Shop Personnel to identify revenue-generating and cost-saving opportunities.
- Evaluate and improve company-wide processes, systems, and operational reporting.
- Facilitate annual financial statement review engagement with external CPA firm.
- Coordinate with external tax advisors and preparers to ensure adherence to tax laws and regulations including multi-state Sales/Use tax regulations, property tax reporting, and business tax returns.
- Ensure end-to-end process and standards documentation, including fully documenting internal controls and ensuring compliance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
- 7-10+ years of experience in accounting or finance with a background in public accounting as a plus.
- Experience with construction or manufacturing industries and ERP systems is beneficial.
- Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to operate both strategically and tactically in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with ASC 606 accounting and the financial complexities of large project-based businesses preferred.
Physical demands and work environment:
- Must be able to sit for extended periods while working in the office.
- Must be able to utilize communication technology (computer, phone, tablet) and financial software systems effectively.
- Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing effectively.
- Must have visual acuity to review financial documents, reports, and computer screens.
- Must be able to occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to perform movements such as standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching.
- This position is primarily office-based; the noise level in the office environment is typically quiet with limited distractions.
- Standard business hours apply, but flexibility is occasionally required to support month-end close, audits, or urgent financial reporting needs.

Project Manager – Chicago

Job Summary:
As a Project Manager at Lenex Steel, you will plan, coordinate, and oversee steel fabrication and erection projects from contract award through completion, ensuring on-schedule delivery, budget adherence, and full compliance with contract documents and scope of work. The Project Manager serves as the primary point of contact for general contractors, engineers, field crews, and trade partners for each project under their management. The most rewarding part of this role is being able to look back on individual structures, entire campuses, and ultimately skylines throughout the Midwest and taking great pride in being the team that built the foundation.

- Excel at reviewing complex contract documents, drawings, and specifications to identify risks, spot opportunities, and develop solutions before problems arise.

These skills will be used to:
- Review contracts, drawings, and specifications to capture scope, identify deficiencies and risks, and highlight opportunities for optimization.
- Work with the general contractor and erector to develop the order of installation.
- Develop comprehensive project schedules, coordinates with the shop for fabrication timelines, and establishes delivery plans.
- Oversee the detailing and RFI process to remove roadblocks for timely submittals.
- Coordinate with the general contractor, erector, and other trades to preemptively address and ensure their needs are met.
- Manage the drawing submittal and approval process to ensure conformance to project requirements as well as timely release for fabrication and construction.
- Align shop fabrication schedules with project timelines.
- Issue subcontracts and monitors the progress of trade partners.
- Visit active jobsites weekly, attends coordination meetings, and coordinates logistics.
- Support field erection teams to address on-site challenges.
- Ensure proper documentation is collected and submitted including pre-planning, safety, quality, and daily progress reports.
- Prepare and manages project budgets and cost forecasts.
- Identify changes to the scope and manages the change order process including timely estimation, quotes, approval, and billing.
- Review and approves invoices and subcontractor change requests.
- Prepare project billings and ensures timely submittal.
- Provide guidance and support to assistant project managers and project coordinators.
- Foster a collaborative, solution-oriented project environment with attention to detail and an uncompromising commitment to safety and quality.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management.
- 3-10 years of construction or engineering experience, preferably in steel fabrication or structural construction.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and project scheduling software (Microsoft Project or similar).
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Valid driver’s license for jobsite visits.
Physical demands and work environment:
- Must be able to sit for extended periods while working in the office and safely navigate active construction sites including uneven terrain, muddy conditions, temporary stairs, scaffolding, and ladders.
- Must be able to utilize communication technology (computer, phone, tablet) and construction tools (tape measure, laser leveling equipment) effectively.
- Must be able to perform movements such as bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
- Must be able to endure exposure to various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, wind) and construction site elements (dust, noise, equipment).
- Must properly use and wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
- Must be able to travel to jobsites regularly using personal or company vehicle.
